At another meal I had this delicious Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake.

Our trip to the National Aviary

Joe and I checked out the National Aviary in Pittsburgh PA on Saturday. We had a lot of fun! We got to feed the lories some nectar and I was pooed on 3 times which makes me extra lucky! : ) We saw several cute penguins and learned about bird medicine. Also they had these cute birdie statues everywhere and I got photos with as many as possible. Hopefully our pet parrot, Bentley, doesn't think we cheated on him for the day!

Niche Award Deadline

The Deadline for the Professional Niche Award is August 31st, 2010 and the deadline for the Student Niche Awards is September 30th 2010. You can get the guidelines here. I was honored a couple of years ago to be a judge for the Niche awards and I loved seeing all the amazing work we were sent. I do have one hint, send really good photos. I cannot recommend enough to have the photos professionally taken. If a photo is blurry or full of other stuff it can be thrown out, if the piece of art isn't easy to see it won't be considered.

The necklace above was made by Lisa Hawthorne and won last years category of silver with stones.

Jewelry Reminiscent of the Ruins

I studied Latin and Rome for 4 years in High School and always loved the buildings and the Ruins. These rings by Open Design & Concepts area really nice! I took many pictures of ruins while I was in Europe several years ago and I can see how the ruins provided inspiration.

Project Runway at Prosperity Lounge in Tremont Cleveland OH

Last night I attended the 3rd episode of Project Runway viewing party. It was a blast! My friend Valerie is on the show so it makes it really fun to watch a friend succeed! I got to talk to her a little before the show came on and I'm so glad things are going well for her. Congrats Valerie!
Make sure to either follow Valerie Mayen's Blog or Like her on Lifetime and support our Cleveland artists!

Valerie's company name for her clothing line is 'Yellow Cake' and at all the viewing parties there are these adorable and delicious yellow cake with pink icing and brown sprinkles. They a from A Cookie and a Cupcake in Tremont and I highly recommend them.

Art vs Art Jewelry vs Jewelry

I am into art jewelry, I think it is really interesting. But the extremes people are taking it to is getting old, all this conceptual stuff. It's not so cool if you can't wear it.

I was reading a wax carving book and came across this quote, " Keep in mind the most important rule of jewelry: If it's not wearable it's not successful." I like that!

I was reading Metalsmith the other day and there was an image of an 'art jewelry' ring. Basically it was a self inflicted welt on someones finger that went all the way around in the shape of a ring. One I'd call that art, only one person can wear that and it's not jewelry, two what great piece of jewelry am I not getting to see because they put a welt in their magazine. There is so much great wearable jewelry out there. I admit it is fun to on occasion make something crazy, we all do it but I want to see gorgeous WEARABLE jewelry. It can still be crazy but I don't need to see someones self mutilation unless that's the topic I'm reading about.

Just my thoughts, Let me know what you think...
